Dressing for Success: How to dress for a Job Interview in India

Your first impression on an interviewer is based on how you look and what you are wearing. Your clothes alone may not get you a job but they sure are a big part of making a first impression.

  • Don't wear anything too distracting.
  • Don't dress too casually or wear flashy clothes.
  • Be neat and clean. Wearing ill-fitting or wrinkled clothes or dirty shoes shows that you don't pay attention to detail.
  • Cover Tattoos, if any, during the interview, irrespective of how proud you are of them.
  • Get your clothes and shoes ready the night before
  • Check yourself in the elevator or rest room, before entering the building
  • Take a mint or chewing gum before reachingthe interview site, but make sure that you throw away the gum before entering the premises.

Dress tips for a Men's Interview

  • Long sleeve shirt (preferably white or non-distracting color) (Collarless or printed T-shorts are strictly avoidable)
    • A coordinate well-fitted collar T-short is acceptable in some roles including startups
  • Formal Leather Belt
  • Suit (solid dark colors) - many organizations, especially technology companies and startups, may not requiresuits for most roles
  • Tie (If you must wear a tie, make sure it's elegant and expensive; nothing looks worse than a cheap polyester tie)
  • Polished leather shoes
    • no slippers, sandals or sports shoes, unless you are joining an NGO or a sports club
  • No Traditional Indian men's dress (Kurtas, dhotis etc) , unless the job really really demands it.
  • Smart leather folder or briefcase to keep your documents
  • Nice but mild Deodorant and perfume on the interview day

Dress tips for a Women's Interview

Negative Marks
  • Coordinated Indian dress is acceptable for women - Smart SareesandKurtas are perfectly fine.
  • Conservative and elegantly cut western suit ( if the job requires so and you can carry them off easily)
  • The suit skirt should be long enough so you can sit down comfortably
  • Conservative shoes
  • Limited but elegant jewelry (no cheap trinkets but no mother's heavy wedding necklace or rings in all fingers)
  • Professional hairstyle
  • Light make-up and perfume
  • Smart leather folder or briefcase to keep your documents
